Domizil Am Gartenplatz:

Growing old and not being able to fend for ourselves is something that terrifies many of us. Coming from Colombia, I have often been struck by the sight of elderly people in Europe carrying out daily tasks—such as buying groceries or using public transportation—alone, without assistance; a much rarer sight in Latin America. This curiosity led me to visit a nursing home in Berlin, where residents allowed me to document a glimpse of their daily lives.

During my visit, I observed an environment of care: residents supported by attentive staff, engaged in daily activities, and forming quiet connections among themselves. At the same time, other aspects revealed a more complex reality. A caregiver shared that around half of the residents receive no visitors, while some rarely leave their rooms or interact with others.

In a society increasingly shaped by individualism, these realities raise broader questions about isolation and care. This project reflects on how aging is experienced, and on the place we collectively make for the elderly within our social fabric.
